A Couple of Personal Heroes

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

So posting every day turned out to be a bust. So I'm downshifting to semi-regular, excluding weekends! Yeah.

Fantomah, colored

I couldn't resist, I put flat colors on it.

Fantomah, Mystery Woman of the Jungle

Inked with a watercolor brush with Speedball super black ink. Colors to come.... sometime.

I think I'm probably the only artist to ever draw Fantomah fan art. The comic was originally drawn by American treasure Fletcher Hanks, and often followed ridiculously absurd and insipid plotlines where the main protagonist was nearly invincible. Fantomah, far from conforming to the stereotpe of typical jungle-bimbo who lives by her razor wits and cat-like cunning, can also fly around and turn into a zombie in order to dispatch her foes.

This past Saturday, I saw two movies I never saw before: Mon Oncle and Sunset Boulevard. Both were great classic films. I especially loved the eye candy and light-hearted comedy that was Mon Oncle (now I know what Mr. Heavyfoot from Kids in the Hall is a reference to). Here's a 15 min sketch of my favorite visual pun in the entire movie:

In this scene, Monsieur Hulot has come to the ultra modern house of Monsieur and Madame Arpel clandestinely in the middle of the night. He comes to prune some bushes he ruined at the Arpel's party earlier and makes a lot of noise (left). In the two circular windows, the Arpels peer out of the window to see what's going on.

I'm trying to start a sketchblog. Hopefully if all things go according to plan, there will be new drawings here everyday! Here's one to begin with.

This was inspired in no small part by Max et Dave Fleischer.
